The MessageScreen messaging firewall provides email security for Microsoft Exchange, Novell GroupWise and IBM Lotus Notes messaging environments.

Eset Software announced it has won its 24th VB100% award from Virus Bulletin magazine. Eset’s NOD32 Antivirus System supports Microsoft Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/2003/XP and most UNIX/Linux, Novell, MS DOS operating systems, as well as Microsoft Exchange Server, Lotus Domino, and other mail servers. It is distributed in ten major languages (Czech, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Slovak, and Spanish), with updates and upgrades made available in all languages at the same time worldwide.

Dell announced the immediate availability of Good Technology’s wireless messaging product, GoodLink. Dell customers can now deploy a complete enterprise wireless messaging and data solution that combines Dell PowerEdge servers, GoodLink system software and Good’s G100 data-capable wireless handheld devices. GoodLink synchronizes wireless handhelds with company Microsoft Exchange servers without the use of a cradle.

Sendmail and Ixos Software this week rolled out new email management software. According to InfoWorld, Sendmail introduced a suite of management products spanning filtering, message management, and anti-spam tools. The Ixos email Compliance Solution is an integrated content management product that creates a structured process for searching, reviewing, and tracking email messages according to compliance policies. It is currently available for Microsoft Exchange environments, with a Lotus Notes version scheduled to be released next year.

Microsoft chairman Bill Gates was expected to announce new junk email filtering technology called SmartScreen at his keynote address Sunday at the annual COMDEX trade show in Las Vegas.The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports that the SmartScreen technology will be used in several products, but will first debut in 2004 in an add-on application for Microsoft’s Exchange Server 2003. The technology will use algorithms to judge whether incoming email messages qualify as junk email and filter them out before they get to the end user’s emailbox.

CNet reports that administrators of email systems based on Microsoft’s Exchange might have spammers using their servers to send unsolicited bulk email. Aaron Greenspan, a Harvard University junior and president of consulting company Think Computer, published a white paper Thursday detailing the problem, discovered when a client’s server was found to be sending spam. Greenspan’s research concluded that Exchange 5.5 and 2000 can be used by spammers to send anonymous email. He says even though software Microsoft provides on its site certifies that the server is secure, it’s not.

Telstra and Microsoft will offer Australian businesses a new range of wireline and wireless technology for fixed and mobile phones and Microsoft smartphones. According to The Age, the new services include Australia’s first release of a range of i-Mate mobile devices that run Microsoft’s Windows Mobile 2003 Platform, including the Microsoft Smartphone 2003 and Pocket PC Phone Edition 2003. Other services include a Telstra hosted Microsoft Exchange 2003 email, calendar and scheduling solution for medium businesses and small corporate customers, also expected to be available from December this year.

InternetNews.com reports the PayPal phishing scourge is wearing a new mask. There’s a new variant of the MiMail email virus is fast spreading through inboxes worldwide, trying to dupe PayPal users into giving up credit card numbers and other sensitive information. The variant that’s being used to phish for PayPal account information comes with a subject line YOUR PAYPAL.COM ACCOUNT EXPIRES and loads a .SCR attachment. The email warns users not to sent credit card information via email but, once the attachment is opened, a PayPal-branded dialog box appears and attempts to collect a user’s PayPal account information.
