Melissa creator sentenced

David L. Smith, creator of the Melissa virus, was sentenced to 20 months in prison and ordered to pay $5,000 in fines. He must also serve 3 years of supervised release, during which he cannot use the Internet, computer networks, or bulletin boards unless authorized by the court.

Spam bill gaining support

Washtech reports that there’s a spam bill might be heading to the Senate floor soon. Montana Sen. Conrad Burns said that the measure enjoys enough support to win the Senate Commerce Committee’s stamp of approval when it is brought up for a committee vote this month, tentatively scheduled for May 16.

Network Computing has this article about Kyberpass Corporation’s Secure Email TrustPlatform, a Microsoft Outlook 98, 2000 and 2002 plug-in. The article says that the most compelling part of TrustPlatform is its encryption-certificate-storage and OCSP (Online Certificate Status Protocol) functionality, which is missing from Outlook.

CNet has this article on the Klez worm that’s working its way to computers worldwide. The article cites a survey by an antivirus company that says the latest versions of the Klez worm have infected more than 7 percent of PCs worldwide, surpassing totals from other threats, such as SirCam and Nimda.
