Panda Software also announced BusinesSecure, a new antivirus solution providing protection specifically targeting networks of small and medium enterprises (SMEs). For those companies requiring extra protection above and beyond the basic version of BusinesSecure, the product can be installed with an additional module: the ExchangeSecure antivirus system that protects Microsoft Exchange Server systems. ExchangeSecure has been designed to integrate with Microsoft Exchange Server systems from version 5.5 to the latest Microsoft Exchange Server 2003. And for version 5.5 it also includes a complete solution for blocking spam.

Computerworld Australia reports that in the National Institute of Standards =20 and Technology=92s ICAT index of computer vulnerabilities, six of the top =20 10 involve buffer overflows. In July 2000, it was discovered that=20 Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express let attackers compromise target=20 computers simply by sending email messages. No one even had to open a=20 message; as soon as the user downloaded the message, message-header=20 routines went into action =97 with unchecked buffers that could overflow and =20 trigger code execution. Even though Microsoft has fixed this vulnerability, =20 buffer overflow is still a major problem.

Trolltech announced Qtopia Phone Edition, a Linux-based application framework for smartphones. TechNewsWorld reports that the move means that handset makers have access to a ready-made user interface and developer tools for Linux-based phones. Qtopia Phone Edition includes a synchronization framework to keep users’ contacts, calendar, to-do list and files up to date with those on their PCs. Currently, this only supports Microsoft Outlook or Qtopia Desktop.

ZDNet’s Charles Cooper says that Microsoft is attempting to convince customers that its Longhorn operating system will go hand-in-hand with a Web services infrastructure that beats Java offerings. IBM, Sun Microsystems and BEA Systems are each courting developers to help ensure that their server software is the preferred choice for implementing business applications.

eWeek reports that IBM rolled out new content management software for small and midsize businesses and Linux shops, as well as new content management integration offerings and records management product enhancements. IBM’s DB2 Content Manager Adapter for WebSphere Business Integrator allows Content Manager to access content from and share content with other applications. IBM also unveiled new versions of DB2 CommonStore for SAP, DB2 CommonStore for Exchange Servers and DB2 CommonStore for Lotus Domino.

TrafMeter is a tool for accounting and monitoring network traffic that counts the traffic based on a rule engine. The rulesets can be used for single hosts, subnets, as well as specific groups of hosts. TrafMeter 4.0 is available in two editions, free and commercial.

This week at Microsoft Professional Developers Conference Service Integrity announced that its Web services monitoring product, called SIFT, will provide a Management Pack plug-in for Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM).

Transform Magazine takes a look at Hummingbird Enterprise 5.1, a Web-based suite of integrated applications including document management, records management, knowledge management, collaboration, search, business intelligence, data integration and a portal. According to the review, the company has more recently added an Automated E-Mail Management solution to provide classification, indexing, search and retention of messaging content in Exchange public folders and Lotus Notes repositories.

Hitachi Data Systems unveiled new applications for email and compliance archival needs, as well as a number of services and solutions to be made available via its indirect sales channels. According to CRN, the services include implementation services for Hitachi ShadowImage data replication and mirroring software; open systems and mainframe services implementation for Hitachi Data Migration Services; and services for Hitachi SplitSecond rapid recovery for Microsoft Exchange.
