
<p>Earlier this year, Google unrolled a major change to Gmail that had dramatic consequences for marketers and businesses using engaging in email marketing. Gmail's formerly integrated inbox is now segmented into at least three categories. The three main tabs primary, social, and promotions quickly decide what emails are about and categorize them within the proper tab.</p><p>Social relates to messages from Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and others. Promotions is where newsletters and daily deal site messages end up. Everything else goes into the Primary tab by default. Some users also see Updates and Forums, depending on which configuration is chosen.</p><p>The change took many Gmail users by surprise. One morning, I opened my email to find that my inbox was now segmented into three sections. Just as marketers didn't necessarily know how to handle it, many users are unsure how to navigate the changes.
