Longtime FoZ (Friend of ZATZ) Jason Perlow has an interesting take on virtualized computing, circa 2016. His scenario is one of the better ones, because it feels quite authentic and mirrors a lot of what we’ve been thinking about here in semi-virtualized ZATZland.

After the recent spate of Florida fires and the beginning of hurricane season, we’re working as fast as we can to put as much of our day-to-day critical desktop work into the cloud, so if we have to hit the road fast, it’ll all be there. Of course, the network operations and ZATZ sites are already in the cloud at our co-lo provider, but it’s time to think about the same things for the desktop.

Internet service provider Embarq eavesdropped on the web surfing habits of 26,000 customers in Gardner, Kansas without notifying them personally. This was part of its testing of new, controversial advertising technology that profiles users, the company told federal lawmakers Wednesday.

Rogue SF sysadmin coughs up passwords

San Francisco City Council regained access to its computer network after Mayor Gavin Newsom convinced network administrator Terry Childs to give them the passwords.

Childs is in jail, accused of blocking all access to the city’s network by resetting passwords. He initially refused to cough up the new password. But on Monday afternoon Newsom visited him in jail and persuaded him to hand over the necessary passwords.

.ME Registers 50,000 New Domain Names in Open Registration

The .ME Registry officially opened for live, real-time registrations July 17, 2008 and was met with huge demand. More than 50,000 new .me domain names were registered in the first two days as Montenegro opened registration to its country-code internationally.

Though cantsleepclownswilleat.me is taken, FredFlintstone.me still seems to be available.
