Hushmail attack blamed on Network Solutions

Secure email provider Hushmail Communications plans to pursue a criminal investigation into a hacking attack that redirected users to a defaced Web site. The company pinned the blame for the breach squarely on the shoulders of domain name registrar Network Solutions. Hushmail, which markets PGP-encrypted email, file storage, and vanity domain services has opened a criminal investigation with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Vancouver to get to the bottom of a DNS server breach caused by a combination of social engineering, phishing, and pharming tactics.

Windows x64 lacks anti-virus

Customers testing the newly released Windows XP Professional x64 Edition have been getting startling error messages that anti-virus protection from at least two vendors is not yet available. According to early adopters looking to exploit the power of the latest 64-bit operating system, the Norton Internet Security 2005 error message is rather blunt: "Symantec currently does not sell any consumer products that are certified to be compatible with 64-bit processors and operating systems." In a statement released to Ziff Davis Internet News, Symantec said it would be "monitoring the adoption of x64 very closely" but confirmed that virus protection on x64 was not yet available.

Traditional media eyeing blogs

Traditional media such as newspapers and radios are casting an increasingly covetous eye over the growing number of Internet blogs, hoping to cash in on a slice of the action. With daily newspaper circulation in decline, the highly critical and at-times irreverent world of the personal online journal with its potential to attract millions of readers is looking more and more attractive. Media mogul Rupert Murdoch even warned the American Society of Newspaper Editors last month that the owners of traditional media cannot afford to be complacent.

Podcasts hit public airwaves

Radio station operator Infinity Broadcasting has announced it plans to launch a podcasting station in San Francisco. The company, a division of Viacom, said Wednesday that content created by listeners will be available at 1550 KYCY in the AM radio band and online for streaming at KYOURadio.com, starting May 16. Podcasts can already be uploaded to the site for free. Selections, based on listener interest and feedback, will be evaluated daily.

Coalition to protect cookies

A coalition of agencies, publishers and measurement firms hopes to head off a consumer revolt against Internet tracking cookies. Safecount brings together online ad industry leaders to discuss steps to insure the reliability of cookies, which are used throughout Internet advertising for measurement, targeting, frequency capping and research. The group said it would work to safeguard consumer privacy while improving counting systems for advertisers. Surveys by Nielsen/Net-Ratings and Jupiter Research suggested over 40 percent of users delete cookies from their computers monthly.

Windows market isn’t saturated

Just because Microsoft has cornered in excess of 90 percent of the desktop operating system market doesn’t mean the Redmond software vendor has no plans for expansion. In fact, Microsoft’s Windows client marketing team has a slew of ideas for how Microsoft and its partners can earn billions of additional dollars from Windows by making some fairly simple strategy tweaks.

Symantec squashes bug

Anti-virus vendor Symantec has released patches for a security vulnerability in several enterprise and consumer products that can be exploited to bypass scanning functionality. In a public advisory posted last Wednesday, the company said an error in the Symantec Antivirus component that is responsible for processing encoded or archived content has the potential to be exploited through the use of a specially crafted ..rar file. The affected enterprise products include Symantec Web Security, Symantec Mail Security for SMTP, Symantec AntiVirus Scan Engine, Symantec SAV/Filter for Domino NT and Symantec Mail Security for Exchange. Several consumer products in the Norton suite also are vulnerable.

Spitzer Sues Intermix over adware

New York State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer now is aiming his sights squarely at the adware and spyware industry. His office on Thursday announced that it is suing Internet marketing company Intermix Media, alleging that it surreptitiously installed adware and spyware on millions of personal computers.
