GroupMe updated its iOS and Android apps Thursday to include a new group splitting feature called, appropriately, Split.

The new bill-splitting service expands GroupMe beyond its niche as a simple group messaging app, and provides a way for the company to make money from a userbase of more than 4.6 million people. With the digital payments space expanding as fast as it is, it's a smart move for GroupMe to grab a piece of the pie in a way that makes sense for users, who already use GroupMe to chat and share photos and locations among one another in private or public groups.

So when would you use Split? Let's say you and your friends had dinner together and, for the sake of simplicity, you put the whole bill on your card. You can attach a Split to the GroupMe group (much like you can attach a photo or a location in the app already), and wait for each person to chip in. The price per person decreases proportionately as each new person chips in, and when everyone has chipped in, you can collect their payments. You can link a credit card to make payments, and a bank account to get funds deposited directly within 24 hours (your first Split could take 3 to 5 days to process, however, as your account information is verified).

Splitting is free of charge for now, but after Tuesday, Split contributors the ones who owe the dinero are charged $0.99 and a 4 percent fee per transaction.

Read also:

GroupMe updates messaging client with in-app money transfers, gallery view (The Verge)

Popular Group Messaging App GroupMe Does A Split With Latest Update (AppAdvice)

Chatting Is Great, But GroupMe's Mobile Apps Now Let Users Split Payments Too (TechCrunch)

Explore: 8 additional articles.
