<p>Facetime, Google Hangouts, click-to-call and free texting apps. When there is an app for everything and a phone becomes less of a "thing" and more of a capability embedded in something else, what does the future hold for providers of traditional telecom services?</p><p>Take just one look at any of the traditional telco's earnings and it's pretty easy to see POTS line revenues and subscribers continue to dwindle due to wireless voice substitution, the defection to a cable operator or, as is becoming more and more the norm, a movement to over the top (OTT) providers, where services are carried "over the top" of another carrier's network, without the provider actively involved in the network's operations. The openness and availability of the Internet, and its increasing bandwidth for fixed and mobile users, have made OTT possible, creating new, disruptive markets where application developers can compete.
