At the ARMA Conference this week in Chicago, Iron Mountain announced a new product it developed with Gimmal, which provides a way to track paper and digital records, regardless of location, using Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) SharePoint.

Iron Mountain has its roots in paper records and still helps companies store paper records, but as many firms make the transition from paper to digital, it's not always cost-effective or even necessary to transfer all the old paper records to a digital format. That doesn't mean however, that companies don't need to track these records or understand what they have.

The problem comes into play when there are legal or compliance requirements and companies need to get their hands on a set of records on a particular subject for a given time period. When you need to get at records quickly, it's helpful to have a single system for searching for and retrieving these files regardless of the format, and that's where this solution comes into play.

The solution takes advantage of Iron Mountain's Accutrac product. Working with Gimmal, Iron Mountain was able to integrate the solution inside SharePoint, a product with a presence inside many organizations already.
