Using Business Contact Manager with Exchange, revisited

THIS WEEK'S POWERTIP

By Diane Poremsky

A couple of weeks ago, David lamented that BCM (Business Contact Manager) won't work with Exchange server accounts in your profile unless you use Small Business Server 2003. That's the official word out of Redmond, but logic says if it works with SBS (Small Business Server), it must work with any Exchange account.

The magic key is a registry entry added by SBS when a computer logs into an SBS network. If you use Exchange and want to try BCM, the steps needed to trick Outlook and BCM into thinking you are using SBS2003 are detailed at http://www.outlook-tips.net/howto/bcm.htm.

You'll need to install the SBS hotfix and add a registry key to your computer to make it work.

Of course, Microsoft considers this an unsupported configuration and you are using it at your own risk. However, I installed it when the SBS patch was first released late last fall and it's working very well.
