Q I have a desktop PC running Windows XP and I use Outlook Express for my email with BT internet. I have now got a laptop and have to use Windows Live Mail. How can I get my email contacts from Outlook Express onto my laptop?Len Faulkner

A This is reasonably easy to do. Start by exporting your contacts from Outlook Express. Launch the program on your Windows XP computer and click Address Book from the Tools menu. Now click Help followed by About Address Book and highlight the path that appears in the File box before pressing Control (Ctrl) and C to copy the file's full path to the Windows Clipboard.

Press the Windows key and R at the same time to display the Run dialogue box and then press Control and V to paste the path that you have copied. Delete the letters that appear after the 'Address Book' part and press Enter this will be text that reads '[username].wab'. A Windows Explorer window will open to display the folder that contains the address book file; copy this to a USB memory key or another disk that can then be transferred to your new computer.

With the address book copied onto your new computer, click the Start button and then click your username to the upper right of the Start menu. Double-click the Contacts folder to open it and then click the double-headed arrow to the right of the toolbar (next to New Contact) before selecting Import from the menu that appears.
